Micronutrients Explained: Vitamins and Minerals

Micronutrients Explained: Vitamins and Minerals

Small nutrients. Big jobs.

We often hear about protein, carbohydrates and fats when we talk about nutrition.

But there is another group of nutrients your body needs every day, just in much smaller amounts.

They are called micronutrients.

Micronutrients include vitamins and minerals, and while your body only needs them in small amounts, they play an important role in keeping you healthy and helping your body function properly.

🍊 Vitamins

Vitamins help your body carry out many different processes.

They support things like your immune system, energy metabolism, healthy skin, bones, vision and cell function.

There are many different vitamins, and each has its own role.

Some examples:

Vitamin C
Supports normal immune function and helps with collagen formation.

Vitamin D
Helps your body absorb calcium and supports healthy bones and muscles.

Vitamin A
Supports normal vision, immune function and healthy skin.

B vitamins
Help your body release and use energy from food and support normal cell and nervous system function.

You can get vitamins from a wide variety of foods including fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, dairy, eggs, meat, fish, nuts and seeds.

🥬 Minerals

Minerals are also essential for your body to function properly.

They support things such as your bones, muscles, nerves, blood and energy production.

Some examples:

Calcium
Helps support strong bones and teeth and normal muscle function.

Iron
Helps transport oxygen around your body and supports normal energy metabolism.

Magnesium
Supports normal muscle and nerve function and is involved in many processes throughout the body.

Zinc
Supports normal immune function and helps with wound healing and cell function.

Minerals come from many foods including meat, seafood, dairy, legumes, wholegrains, nuts, seeds and vegetables.

So, how do you get enough?

This is where variety becomes important.

No single food contains every vitamin and mineral your body needs.

Eating a variety of foods across the different food groups can help provide the range of nutrients your body needs.

Think:

🥦 Vegetables
🍓 Fruit
🌾 Wholegrains
🥚 Eggs
🐟 Fish and seafood
🥛 Dairy or alternatives
🫘 Legumes
🥜 Nuts and seeds
🥩 Meat and other protein foods

The more variety you have, the more opportunities you give your body to get the nutrients it needs.

The Apuki way

You don't need to memorise every vitamin and mineral.

You don't need to obsess over every nutrient in every meal.

Start with the basics.

Eat a variety of foods.
Choose nourishing options regularly.
Understand what your body needs.
Keep it simple.

Because good nutrition isn't about one perfect food.

It's about what you do consistently over time.

Learn. Simplify. Apply.

Live Well, Simply. 🧡
